Virtues to Live By
Virtues
At St Malachy’s, we are committed to helping our children grow in virtue so that they can become compassionate, confident and faith‑filled young people who shine the light of Christ in the world. This commitment lies at the heart of our Catholic mission and shapes the way we live, learn and worship together each day.
We follow the Diocese of Leeds Virtues to Live By programme, which supports children in developing a deep understanding of key virtues and how they can be lived out in daily life. Each virtue is explored over a half‑term, giving children meaningful opportunities to reflect, practise and grow in these qualities as part of their spiritual and personal development.
What does Virtues to Live By look like at St Malachy’s?
- Across each half‑term, the whole school focuses on two virtues linked to the Catholic tradition and the liturgical year.
- Children learn what each virtue means, how Jesus models it, and how it can be recognised in themselves and others.
- Class worship, circle time and RE lessons deepen understanding and provide practical ways for children to live out the virtues.
- Each week, during our Friday Celebration Assembly, a child from every class is awarded a Virtue Certificate in recognition of how they have demonstrated the focus virtue in their words and actions.
- Teachers use programme resources to guide reflection and support children in growing these virtues throughout school life.
Why virtues matter
The virtues we focus on help our children grow towards:
a stronger relationship with Jesus, human flourishing, andThey guide how we treat one another, make decisions and contribute positively to the life of our school and wider community. By growing in virtue, our children learn how to live out Gospel values in their friendships, families and everyday lives.
Virtues across the school year
The virtues follow the rhythm of the Church’s liturgical year. For example:
- Love of learning at the start of the school year,
- Love of neighbour and self‑control during Lent,
- Prayerfulness and generosity during Advent.
Each half‑term builds on this foundation, supporting children to grow in character, faith and love.

Our commitment
At St Malachy’s, we believe that nurturing virtue is not simply something children learn about, it is something they become. Guided by the example of Christ, and supported by our families and parish community, we strive to help every child grow into the very best version of themselves, living and learning together in the light of the Lord.
